Governments take to CRM solutions to enhance constituent relations

Driven by the need to improve its management of constituent relationships, a new report predicts that government spending on customer relationship management (CRM) technology solutions in the US, UK, Germany and France will grow from $2.9 billion in 2008 to $4.4 billion in 2013.

In today’s commercially-oriented world, it has become a trend among public sector agencies to treat constituents as customers who expect top levels of service.The operating environment for public sector agencies is characterized by the need to "do more with less". Firms that under-invest in SOA governance will fail to reap rewards

Organisations that under-invest in the Software Oriented Architecture (SOA) governance initiative will fail to reap the long-term benefits SOA offers. This is one of the key conclusions to be drawn in a new report. While technology support will be required, this is primarily an organisational issue with the emphasis on putting the right people in the right roles, and giving them the necessary authority to ensure that the architecture design is kept consistent with business aims and requirements.

Most organisations deploying SOA leave it too late to implement effective governance. The longer you leave it, the more difficult it becomes to "retrofit" governance to an operational SOA environment. However, the effort must be made if the SOA initiative is not to descend into chaos. Read more…

How a little WINE lets Google top Microsoft at their own game

Recently, there have been an awful lot of people speculating about Google’s new product: Google Chrome OS. This has been a product which has been talked about in hushed circles for some time and, like everything else Google does, there has been very little said from the company on the subject until the recent press release. They’ve slated a release for it, according to their blog, for 2010 and, if my suspicions are correct, this will mean the end of Microsoft and I would like to explain why.

Cities Aim For 24/7 Public Internet Connectivity

Is your internet connection at home being difficult? No sweat, you can soon run down and check your email on the nearest traffic light.

About 400 cities in the US and UK have deployed or are currently building municipal wireless internet connections which will see service providers using the city’s infrastructure to provide community wireless access, says a new report.

In the next five years, the spend on municipal wireless in the UK and US will reach $6.4 billion, as local governments and internet service providers recognise the benefits these networks offer, predicts the report.
